HALCYON RENEGADE 01 - novel sneak peak

Updated: Sep 5, 2021

There’s something seriously beautiful in the contrast between an electronic music festival during the night time and the day time.

As the sun sets, the excitement and positive-dance energy flows into the skies and lights it up with colours of orange and pinks, with the help of Sun Star. The thumping music continues and your positive anticipation is still high. As the night approaches, you head back to camp for more supplies required for the long night ahead. You grab as many layers as comfortably possible, put the sunnies away, stash your pockets with “cold” beers, a torch, doof stick and any other helpful provisions. You continue on your search for the best moments in your life. The night hits, leaving only camp-site lights and road lamps to light up your route. The minimal lights still manage to light up the piercing wide-eyed, gremlin festival goers as you pass them. You and your friends follow the sounds of the people and the music; the awaited fast-paced, atonal, underground, thumping tunes. Although in the beginning it in some ways doesn’t differ to the music from the day just gone, the harsher, crisp night air hits you in a different way. Triggering different excitement responses in your body. The feel-good, sunny music that is perfect for beers has faded by this stage into the heavier music and keeps you awake through the night and into the morning. Beady pupils look at you over their masks as they pass, only emphasising the darkness around you. Amongst the encapsulating heat of the busy crowd, you can take off as many those warm layers as you want that you brought with you. The energy felt around the space is incredible, with a crowd so enthusiastic surrounding you that you never want to stop. The night continues this way, with heavy bass and piercing laser lights. The wind blows through the trees and exposes the feeling of isolation. You may be surrounded by people but you truly are in the middle of who knows where. Night-time is much like the morning recovery, with lots of trash-talk and a similarity to the day with all the exploration to be had. You discover new parts of the festival site that the sun hadn’t helped expose you to, bringing a different energy with the night having fallen.
