[CREATIVE] PROJECTS

Take a look at some of the small [creative] projects I have put together in order to pass the time.

'HALCYON RENEGADE' NOVEL (2024)

IMG_1791.JPG

Halcyon Renegade; every page offers an invitation of introspection and creativity.
This coffee-table-zine documents details of life through a mosaic of photographs and essays. From the rawness of daily existence to the exploration of identity and the power of music, this 600-page journey is a testament to the complexity of human experience. Join the author Margot Bishop on a reflective journey, where nostalgia intertwines with the present, and every moment is a piece of a larger thought.

'Halcyon Renegade' is not just a book—it's a conversation, an exploration, and a celebration of human emotion. A collation of memories, thoughts, concepts, and eloquent musings. It's contemplation from late-night walks, late-night talks, train considerations, and epiphanies. It's journal entries and honest introspections. It's a conversational exploration of thought, a dialogue between me, myself, and I—and whoever is reading it on the other end.

'ECHOES OF SELF'  SHORT FILM

Written, directed, edited, composed by Margot Bishop. DOP and VFX by Finn O'Shaughnessy.

In this visually striking, deeply introspective short film, a queer non-binary protagonist embarks on a profound journey of self-reflection, grappling with identity, memory, and healing. As they confront their past and present selves, private moments unfold in their bedroom and bathroom, where they examine their body with wonder and hurt, trying to reconcile their outer appearance with inner turmoil. Old photographs stir buried memories, leading the protagonist to a poignant moment of recognition. A surreal train ride blurs the boundaries between reality and the subconscious, where a chance encounter with a mother and child awakens long-suppressed emotions. In a final, dreamlike sequence, they descend into the depths of their memories—a vast, empty room where they meet a younger version of themselves. In this silent exchange, a powerful bond is formed, offering the protagonist a moment of connection, acceptance, and healing as they embrace their younger self.

Rid of dialogue and visually driven, this narrative explores the themes of identity, estrangement, and self-compassion, told through evocative imagery and the quiet power of gestures.

'THE LANGUAGE OF MOMENTS'  SHORT FILM

The Language of Moments is a 20-minute reflective film, a video portrait; encompassing the interesting place to exist that is in fact a young adult’s brain with all of its thoughts and feelings. It is revolved around Oliver. His interests in skating and painting have melted into goo, oozing through his soul and becoming his personality. This film could perhaps be seen as a coming-of-age reflection, exploring the deep thought processes that young people endure during their lives. Music I made with Emilia Predebon (Pretty Girl) as well as footage that is entirely my own make up the film.

're_generate' (2024) AI-HUMAN-AUGMENTED SHORT FILM

by Margot Bishop, Em Cox and Isabella Cook

re_generate is a short film exploring the intricate interplay between memory, artificial intelligence, and human experience. Through this work, we delve into themes of fragility, fallibility, and the constructive nature of memory, questioning how memories shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Revisiting childhood to examine the ephemeral nature of memory and how it can be distorted or lost over time. Confronting memories in their fallibility and deconstruction, we investigated the errors, glitches, and fallibilities in both human and memory and AI. Reconstructing memory to highlight how memories are actively constructed and reconstructed, shaping personal and cultural narratives. Presented as a three-fragmented-series, each part of the series examines different theoretical concepts. We invite observers to contemplate the ephemeral nature of memory, the complexities of the human mind. Reflect on the ethical and existential dimensions of using machines to reconstruct memories and consider how advancements in AI technology have blurred the lines between human cognition and artificial intelligence. Through personal narratives and critical reflection, we seek to provoke deeper contemplation on the significance of memory in shaping our identities and understanding of the world.

Filmed and edited by Margot Bishop for RMIT University Communication Media degree assignment.

'LABYRINTH OF SHADOWS' SOUND DESIGN AUDIO PIECE

In this immersive audio piece, "Labyrinth of Shadows" listeners are drawn into a hauntingly surreal journey through the corridors of memory and loss. The soundscape evokes the protagonist’s fractured psyche, weaving together textures of ambient drones, pulsating IDM beats, and dissonant piano that echo with unsettling familiarity. A complex tapestry of sounds—sharp metallic echoes, distant whispers, flickering lights, and the low hum of a heartbeat—conjures a sense of both entrapment and introspection.

SPIN&SPUN - SEMI-REGULAR NAARM PARTIES

Spin&Spun was co-founded by myself and Gus Payne (Local GP). We intend to curate and run semi-regular electronic music dance parties in Naarm.

And introducing the inaugural event of spin&spun - for our first affray we are bringing you a cute little sunday dance at the Rochey to get you out of this cold weather and onto a warm dancefloor.

We are over the moon to welcome esteemed local legends Love Above (DJ Ingrid & Ryan Berkeley) and 3rd Orbit to our debut edition alongside your residents & hosts - set to bring nothing but the best in music and vibes to defy those Sunday winter blues.

In Naarm, we are spoilt for choice in terms of music and entertainment. Spin&spun aims to bring together events that focus more on house and less on the spacey stuff - serving up downtempo beats and chill-break orientated music. A main focal point on feel-good, fun dance music is the goal.

Stay tuned for more events, collabs, mixes and more.

MISHEP ANEMOIA ZINE

Anemoia is the feeling of nostalgia for a time you've never known.

2020 was the year I released my first zine. A limited-edition, Australian printed 46-page release.

Anemoia was released through the FuckIt website; https://www.fuckitzine.com/ , which is a group of creatives who create limited edition runs of zines, prints, and apparel; mainly tees.

The above video was a promotional video posted to social platforms.

To go alongside the promotional video, I converted old VHS family tapes to digital format. Seeing as though the zine was relevant to the feeling of "anemoia", I created this compilation which regarded a similar theme, idea and feeling. The constant reminder that life moves quickly and memories fade the same way.

When lockdown hit, I began documenting my memories for my own satisfaction but felt that the project related to the creative endeavors I planned to share with others too.

For the past three years, I have provided Year13 with photographs that best represent the life of an adolescent and primarily depict the moments that young people experience. They have been a great support to me consistently, by showing unmistakable appreciation for my photographs. In return for my photographs, I get a credit on their post and ongoing regard.
Year13 endeavor to connect young people to all the options available to them after high school and beyond. They provide career and life advice that will help them find the opportunity that is right for them. Their mission is to improve the health and happiness of all young Australians and create a place where we can have our voices heard.
It feels good to behind a hopeful organisation such as this and feels even better to be blessed with their support.

'A RECORD OF REAL LIFE' PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES (2022)

My photographic series A Record Of Real Life (2022) depicts a group of young party-goers – ravers if you will – as its subject; who use fashion, dance, alcohol and drugs, makeup, tattoos and love as a form of recreational euphoric exploration. Queerness is explored and boundaries are pushed.
The theme of the series is in regards to the self-expression that is undergone in the rave scene in terms of sexuality and finding yourself in your identity, as well as the feeling of being young and taking charge of that newfound identity. The uncertainty that the pressures of society provide manifests itself into recklessness and a sense of carelessness, and this is attempted to be depicted in this series sometimes in the form of gluttony. The electronic music scene has a rich history embedded in race and sexuality, and the ravers have always been underrepresented due to their push against the usual rules and regulations of society. There is a large variation of people involved in the rave scene, spanning from ravers and dancers to musicians and video jockeys. The scene manifests in many ways, often in clubs, at ‘befores and afters’ in people’s houses, and in illegal locations for underground raves. The nighttime is where young people explore and let go of societal expectations. I attempted to capture part of the essence in this series as part of a uni assignment here in Amsterdam.

PENNY WAFFLE AND COMPAXO HOTDOG REDESIGN: PACKAGE AND BRAND IDENTITY

ALBUM DESIGN FOR A FRIEND

Using photographs I had taken and manipulated on Adobe Photoshop, I designed two album covers for a friend's birthday. The personalised, Australian pressed vinyl are two 33rpm 12" mixtapes with front and back cover design, printed A and B side centre label, a tracklist insert, and personalised thank you note.
The design concept was catered to the receiver, featuring photographs of them and songs suited to their listening preference.
